Sponge

The birth control sponge is used by the woman. It is soft and round. It is placed deep in the vagina to cover the cervix. A chemical in the sponge kills sperm.

The sponge can be left in the vagina 24 hours. A couple can have intercourse as often as they want during this time. The sponge must be left in the vagina for 6 hours after the last intercourse.

To remove the sponge, gently pull on the loop of string attached to it.

Women should not use the sponge during their periods because of the danger of toxic shock syndrome. Other birth control methods should be used at this time. Foam or condoms work well.
