Bart: What's new for spring hats?
Lola: I love doing spring hats because you can do anything you want and people are more inclined to wear hats in the spring so we did a lot of things like this. [Tilts on her head a confectionary little straw hat decorated with pastel silk blossoms, pink netting, and baby blue grosgrain ribbon.]

Bart: This looks very "Gigi"/turn-of-the-century to me.
Lola: Exactly. In the spring I really indulge myself. I think of myself as a rather butch type of woman but I really love doing these frilly things in spring. [Tries on a big straw picture hat with giant beige organza cabbage roses.]

Bart: How does someone know if a hat is right for her?
Lola: A hat is a scary thing because it's close to your face which is where your personality comes out so you have to be very cautious. A hat frames the face so you have to look at yourself very, very honestly. You don't look at it and say, "What a pretty hat." You have to put it on. It has to really sit comfortably on your head, and you stand far away from the mirror so you can see yourself full length. And you look. Does it look nice? Does it make your hips look big? A hat has to fit your hips, not your head. A hat is not for the head; it's for the body. If you're shaped like a pyramid, you don't want a tiny little hat on top. If you wear a hat, people will look at you, so you better look good.
