Art cars unite at Burning Man 1994!

"Our Lady of What We Have in Common," a decorated church bus created by Tom Kennedy, Shelley Buschur and friends, made her first appearance in the desert in 1994. Accompanied by Kennedy's famous shark car, "Ripper the Friendly Shark," these two vehicles represented the Houston contingency. Expect to see "Ripper" on the playa again this year with his new friend, "Max the Daredevil FinMobile."

Jim Skinner, avid member of the Cacophony Society in Portland, Oregon, drove his vehicle to the festival and enlightened participants with the car's motto "Why are we here? Ask your dog."

Jim is also a mechanic and assisted Tom Kennedy with a minor shark repair when Ripper was overheating. Even sharks need extra water in the desert!

Made famous by his clever retorts in the Weird America video shot by filmmaker Chuck Cerino, Harry Waters displayed his Car 23 to the world while he discussed sqaure dancing, Romans, and Marine Goop.

Harry drove his car all the way from Washington to revel in the desert. After setting up camp next to "Our Lady of What We Have in Common," he attached several drums to the top of the vehicle and beat upon them with vigor. Go Harry Go!

Other cars in attendance included:

  • the painted school bus, "The Land of Milk and Cookies" that brought a handful of paying travellers from the Bay area;
  • Eric Lamb's "Alien Warrior, The Land Yatch," a boat on wheels, from Arizona;
  • Harrod Blank's "OhMyGawd," a well-travelled art car that starred in Harrod's full length feature film, "Wild Wheels."
