Memoirs

Ah, the memories...here is a bit of history on what CLAMP was, and what they have come to be today.

CLAMPs name has been used ever since their doujinshi days (apparently the name means something like a pile of potatoes, or so Nanase said in an interview featured in Animerica). At that time, the group was composed of 11 members and by the time of their debut, the manga RG Veda, in the third issue (1989) of the magazine South, only seven members were left. The leading artist for the series Cluster and Combination was not Mokona, but two other members who quit later because their style was being heavily influenced by Apapas style. The current members of CLAMP are from the Kansai area of Japan (Osaka, Kyoto and Shiga Prefecture).

Known for their beautiful drawings and innovative layouts, CLAMP does use zip-tone (AKA screen tone: sticker-like sheets w/patterns used for shading in comics) very much in their works, which enhances the look and quality of their mangas. The plotline of their works are also tend to break from the stereotypical features of whatever genre they happen to be writing in (IMHO).

CLAMP has also extended beyond just comic writing; they have made picture books for children (Princess Mokona's Picture Book), and Ohkawa-san has even written the lyrics for a X(?) CD album.

Many of their works have been animated, and the latest include the Card Captor Sakura TV series and movie, with a Clover animated clip, and the Wish Gift Box, which includes animated clips from Wish. Many OVA's (Original Video Animation-made especially for release on video) have been made of some of their various series, and of course, there is also the X Movie.
Nowadays CLAMP seems to be stretching their talent to previously untouched fields with their newest series, Angelic Layer, a manga for a shonen (boy) audience.
