LinuxWorld forums FAQ

Have a question? Send it to the editors.

Q: What are the LinuxWorld forums?

A: They are based on nntp/nnrp/innd (i.e., you read them with your news reader, not your browser) discussion groups where LinuxWorld readers can comment on stories, swap technical information, and generally impress each other with their sharp insights.

Q: NNTP? Why not just make them Web-based?

A: The Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) is a robust, widely used, highly successful technology for discussion groups. Why not use it?

We like the interface, we like the fact that you can filter out messages from people you don't like, we like the fact that it's low bandwidth.

For a more eloquent justification, read Nick Petreley's editorial, Welcome to LinuxWorld.

Q: What is the name of the LinuxWorld news server?

A: forum.linuxworld.com

Q: How do I participate in the discussion forums?

A: Just click on a discussion forum link. If you have a default newsreader set up on your system, it should automatically launch that newsreader and take you to the forum. If you don't have a default newsreader, you'll have to install one to participate.

No username or password is required to read or post to the forums.

We have links to the discussion forums at the bottom of every LinuxWorld story.

Q: So what, exactly will I be discussing?

A: Each LinuxWorld story will have its own discussion forum. So if you have something to say about a story you've read, or would like to see what other readers are saying about the story, you'll want to go to the discussion forum.

Q: Are the discussion forums moderated?

A: No.

Q: Netscape returns the error message "No NNTP server is configured." when I click on forums. What do I do?

A: Some versions of Netscape (3.0, for example) require that you have a mail server (any mail server) configured to successfully click on the links to LinuxWorld forums.

To do this in Netscape 3 go to Options --> Mail and News Preferences --> Servers.

You need to have a news server in the "News (NNTP) Server:" box. Enter your company or ISP's news server here. If you can't provide the name of this server, you can always enter forum.linuxworld.com here to get access to the LinuxWorld forums.

Q: I don't know anything about newsgroup readers, where can I get more information?

A: If you use Netscape, go here: http://help.netscape.com/docs/client/NetHelp/colltoc.htm

If you use Internet Explorer, go here: http://www.halcyon.com/cerelli/internetnews.htm

Q: I don't want to subscribe. Can I still read the forums?

A: Yes. Now you can participate in the forums whether you're a subscriber or not.

Q: How do I unsubscribe from LinuxWorld

A: Send an email to the LinuxWorld Webmaster asking to unsubscribe.
