Introducing Eudora


Eudora Window

The first time you open Eudora Pro, you see the main Eudora window, as shown below. The Eudora Light main window is similar.

Note: When you open Eudora, you see the windows you had open when you last closed Eudora.

The Toolbar

The following table describes the icons you see on the main window's toolbar.

Icon Name Description

Trash
Transfers the current messages to the Trash mailbox.

Out
Opens your Out mailbox. (Eudora Pro only)

Eudora Light users can choose Out from the Mailbox menu.


In
Opens your In mailbox. (Eudora Pro only)

Eudora Light users can choose In from the Mailbox menu.


Check Mail
Checks your POP server to see if you have any new mail. (Eudora Pro only)

Eudora Light users can choose Check Mail from the File menu.


New Message
Opens an outgoing message composition window.

Reply
Generates a reply to the current message or message summaries.

Forward
Generates a forward message for the current message or message summaries. Use Forward to send a message you received to another person.

Redirect
Generates a redirect message for the current message or message summaries. Use Redirect to forward a message to another person and retain the original sender's name in the From field.

Previous
Opens the previous message listed in a mailbox. (Eudora Pro only)

Next
Opens the next message listed in a mailbox. (Eudora Pro only)

Attach File
Displays the Attach File dialog. (Eudora Pro only)

Eudora Light users can choose Attach File from the Message menu.


Check Spelling
Checks the spelling of the current message composition window, text file, or signature window. (Eudora Pro only)

Nicknames
Displays the Nicknames window, so you can manage your email address book.

Print
Prints a current message, text file, signature file, Filter Report window, dialup Navigation Trace window, or Ph window.

Help
Puts you in Help mode to display context-sensitive Help. When the cursor changes shape, click on an icon or other object to see a brief description of the object. (Eudora Pro only)


Basic Tasks

The following table summarizes how to accomplish basic email tasks using Eudora.

To ... Do the following ...
Check for new mail Do one of the following:
  • Select Check Mail from the File menu to manually check if you have new mail.

  • Choose Options from the Tools menu to display the Options dialog. Highlight the Checking Mail icon, and enter a value in the Check for mail every ? minutes field. Eudora will check for new mail periodically.

Read a message Double click on the message header in the mailbox. New messages are stored in the In mailbox.
Send new messages
  1. Select New Message from the Message menu.

  2. Type an email address in the To field.
    Tip: You can send email to yourself for practice.

  3. Type the topic of the email in the Subject field.

  4. Type additional email addresses in the Cc and Bcc fields if you want to send copies to other people.

  5. In the message area, type your message.

  6. Click on Send or Queue.
Reply to or forward email
  1. Click on the message header in the mailbox.

  2. Select Reply To or Forward To from the Message menu.
    The subject and original message are copied to the new message. For Reply, the original sender's name appears in the To field.

  3. Edit or delete the original message as necessary.

  4. Click on Send or Queue.
Delete email
  1. Select the message header in any mailbox.

  2. Select Delete from the Message menu.
    The message is stored in the Trash mailbox.

  3. To delete the message permanently, select Empty Trash from the Special menu.
Move email messages
  1. Click on the message header.

  2. Do one of the following:
    • To create a new folder, select New from the Transfer menu.
    • To use an existing folder, select the folder name from the Transfer menu.
