Image Formats

The Export Image dialog allows you to export your drawing in a number of different file formats, including BMP, GIF, JPG, PICT, PNG, SVG, and TIF. The information in this topic will help you determine which file format to use for a specific purpose.

BMP

BMP is a lossless format that is good for multimedia and presentation programs. BMP have large files sizes but great quality. The BMP format is most widely used on Windows computers.

There are no settings for the BMP format.

GIF

GIF is a good format for illustrations for web pages.  GIF files can only have 256 colors, making GIF a good choice for simple drawings. Other formats, such as JPG or PNG, are better for drawings with many colors and photographs.

Use the Colors slider to change the number of colors in the exported image.

Check the Transparency box to make the background of your drawing transparent in the exported GIF image. If your drawing does not have a background, the exported image will have transparency enabled by default.

JPG

The JPG format is good for photographs for web pages and multimedia. The JPG format uses compression that can help reduce the file size of a large drawing.

Use the Quality pull-down menu or the File Size slider to select the quality of the exported image. Smaller files download more quickly; larger files have better image quality. Use the preview to determine the best setting for your image.

PICT

PICT is a lossless format that is good for multimedia on the Macintosh Classic operating system. PICT images are large and may not be supported on all Windows computers.

There are no settings for the PICT format.

PNG

PNG is a format that is good for illustrations and photographs that include transparency. PNG is not supported by all Web browsers. If you are not sure the application you will use the image with supports PNG, you can use JPG for photographs or GIF for images that include transparency.

Check the Transparency box to make the background of your drawing transparent in the exported PNG image. If your drawing does not have a background, the exported image will have transparency enabled by default.

SVG

The SVG format is good for sharing files with other vector drawing programs. Vector files can be scaled without loss of quality.

There are no settings for the SVG format.

TIF

TIF is a lossless format that works well with publishing software.

Use the Units pull-down to choose the unit of measure to be used in the exported image.

Use the Width and Height fields to choose the size of the exported image. Check the Constrain Proportions check box to ensure that the dimensions of your image do not change as you enter a new value for Width or Height.

Use the Resolution pull-down to choose the resolution of the exported image. This option is only available on Windows computers.
