The Remote Control Settings Tab

With DigiTV v2.0 (and above) you now have the ability to use your remote control to control other third-party applications as well as DigiTV.

This is an extremely powerful but simple utility that will probably take a little time to get used to. However, to help you we have provided a few templates for common applications (such as Winamp and Windows Media Player) that you can look through as worked examples.

Tip: In order to include the examples in your registry, double click the RemoteExamples.reg file that was included in your installation.

The idea behind this feature is that you can configure DigiTV to translate received remote control signals in to keypresses which are then sent on to other applications, just as though the user had pressed them themselves.

DigiTV can only perform these functions when it is located in the system tray as otherwise the received remote control signals will be interpreted as commands targeted at DigiTV itself.

You can configure DigiTV to also start other applications from the remote control that are specified in Startup Buttons in the Applications section.

The Remote Buttons Section

Here are all of the buttons that are present on the remote control (at least the ones that you can use!).

The box is only enabled when you can select a button for a particular task. For example, if you want to use a button to start an application, highlight Startup Buttons in the Applications section and double-click the button you wish to use.

If you want to use a button to perform a function on an already started application, highlight the application name in the Applications section instead before double-clicking the button.

The Applications Section

This Section describes the buttons that are used to start individual applications, and also those that are used to control them. Once you have highlighted the Startup Buttons tree and double clicked one of the buttons in the Remote Buttons section, an entry is added to the tree.

You must now edit the "My App's Location" box either by hand or by using the Browse button to describe the location and filename of the application to be started.

Configuring a New Application

To define a new application for the remote to control, hit the New App button, and a new entry will be added to the Application tree.

This entry should be edited to reflect the name present in the caption bar of the application once it has started. Case is not important, and as long as the name appears somewhere in the caption bar, then DigiTV will find it.

Having created the New Application item, the next step is to define which remote control buttons control it. As soon as the 'New Application' item is highlighted, the Remote Buttons box becomes enabled. Double-click one of the buttons in this box and it will be added to the list of buttons associated with the application.

Next, expand the button item in the tree under 'New Application' and highlight the New Key Sequence tree entry. You can now proceed to associate a key sequence with this button:

The Key Sequence Sections

Using the Key edit box, you can define which keypress (or combination of keypresses) you want DigiTV to send to an application in response to a remote control button press.

If the key you want to use cannot be typed into the edit box, you may be able to select it from the Key Type dropdown list. If there are any modifiers to be made to the keypress such as SHIFT, CTL or ALT, you can select which ones to activate by using the checkboxes provided. Function keys are synthesised by checking the F box and typing the number into the key box.

Once a keypress has been completed, hit the Add button and a coded form will be added to the list in the Key Sequence box to the right. You can now construct another keypress and add it to the sequence list. Up to 4 keypresses can go to make up a single key sequence.

Having completed the key sequence for the action, highlight the New Key Sequence tree entry in the Applications section and hit the Set button. A translated list of the sequence will then be added to the tree entry.

Pre-defined buttons

There is only one pre-defined remote control button that is global across all applications (except DigiTV). The Exit button on the remote control will exit an application if it is one of the ones defined to be started by DigiTV and is in the foreground at the time.
