Setting up volume or quantity discounts
MYOB Accounting Plus offers you two options for discounting the prices that appear on invoices. One option or the other may be better for you, depending upon your business and the information you wish to display on printed invoices.
Quantity breaks -- If you have a complex pricing structure that includes quantity breaks, breaks for various customer types, or both, consider using the price matrix feature in the Selling Details view of the Item Information window. This matrix allows you to specify quantities for as many as five quantity breaks. (Only one is required, however.) Each of these price breaks can be applied to one or more customer types, so that preferred customers receive better prices and quantity breaks. When you enter an item invoice, the price shown will be the quantity break price for the price level you've assigned to the customer. (To enter pricing level information for an item)
Percentage discounts -- Because the quantity breaks and price levels are actual prices and no discount percentages are shown on invoices, customers may not recognize that they've received a discounted price. If discounting is part of your marketing strategy, you may want to give customers line-item "volume" discounts instead. In this case, use the Disc% column to enter a discount percentage for each line item you want to include in the discount. (You can set a default percentage that will appear for all of a particular customer's line items using the Volume Discount % field in the Selling Details view of the Card Information window.)
You can also use the Disc% column in the Sales window to enter a one-time discount for a particular invoice if the customer doesn't normally received discounted prices.
There may be times when you'll want to combine quantity breaks and percentage discounts, but be careful not to give more of a discount than you intended. If you offer an early-payment incentive as part of your credit terms, consider the effect of that discount on your profit margin, as well.
