ANDREY VINOGRADOV, a gifted composer and pianist from Moscow (Russia), born in
1959 in Ekaterinburg, graduated with highest honours from the Moscow Gnessin
Music College and completed his education at Gnessin Academy of Music with Igor
Brille in composition and jazz piano. Later he joined the best Russian
jazz-rock group The Arsenal, directed by a renowned saxophonist Alexei
Kozlov and took part in the recording of two Arsenal LPs The Second
Wind and Pulse 3, which later were released on CDs
Time-scorched - III and Time-scorched - IV (1997-1998).
Ever since his youth, Andrey has sought to create new blends among the most diverse genres by combining elements of classics, jazz and folk.Since 1989, being inspired by the Russian Silver Age modernist poetry, A.Vinogradov has started experiments linking a traditional song form with folklore and avant-garde instrumental compositions.
In 1990, an audio-cassette album The Odour of Dreams with Iana Kim as a singer was recorded.
In 1992, he founded a trio (Andrey Vinogradov - piano, Ivan Smirnov - guitar, Iana Kim - vocals), which appeared at various festivals together with Mikhail Alperin, Arkady Shilkloper and Sergey Starostin. The trio recorded an audio-cassette album When the Snow Comes off.
In 1996, CD Dryad's Songs with Galina Lipina as a singer was released. It consists of a series of songs to the verses of the Russian modernist poets (V.Soloviov, A.Blok, M.Voloshin, A.Akhmatova, etc.). Here Andrey Vinogradov successfully fuses the chamber lyrical mood of Russian romance with the rhythmics of jazz-rock and specific folklore intonations. This project, due to its up-to-date form, can't be considered purely academic, nevertheless its close relation to the Russian classical heritage (Mussorgsky, Rachmaninov, etc.) is quite obvious. It does not belong to jazz either, however the songs bear certain features of the style.
And now A.Vinogradov introduces a new project Nado mnoi pevala matushka... (My Mother Used to Sing over Me...) in collaboration with a talented young performer Lisa Anischenko (vocals and keyboards). The project combines jazz piano and exotic folk musical instrument wheel lyre with symphonic sounds of a sampler orchestra. This project represents a new musical direction that creates a style influenced by such diverse musical cultures as the Russian Group of Five composers school, and the elements of free jazz improvisation. The presentation of this project took place in Moscow Glinka Museum of Musical Culture in November 1998, and received most favourable comments from the Culture News program of Kultura TV channel.
