Before you begin the upgrade, conversion or installation

If you are upgrading or converting SuperOffice you should make a backup of both the program and data directory (...\SUPEROFF and ?\SO_ARC). If your installation fails, the easiest way to go back to the previous installation is to restore this backup.
Make sure that all users are logged out of SuperOffice and that non of the SuperOffice programfiles are kept open on the server. Remove the write protection from all files in the program directory or its subdirectories.
All travel users have to be checked into the central database before you start the upgrade or conversion. After your installation is complete, reinstall SuperOffice travel on all travel computers. Also make sure that you have entered your keycode before generating a update prototype for the first time.

Protocols
Sybase SQL Anywhere 5.5 runs on most network protocols. We, however, prefer one of the following protocols in this order: TCP/IP, IPX or NetBEUI. For more information on which protocol to run and how to tune this, please look in the Sybase SQL Anywhere Network Guide. If you can run only one protocol, the server will be faster.
If you are running in a WAN, TCP/IP is the protocol that gives you the easiest way to configure your SQL Anywhere clients.

Client Software
All clients or single-user engines (dbclienw.exe, dbeng50w.exe and rtdsk50w.exe) have to be Windows 3.1 clients as long as SuperOffice is a 16-bit application. You have to use Windows 3.x clients even if you are running Windows 95 or Windows NT on your workstations.

Preconditions
This installation guide only describes the installation of SuperOffice 4.02, 16-bit version. A 32-bit version is not yet available.
The server installation is only described for Windows NT. For installation on other platforms please refer to the Sybase SQL Anywhere Network Guide.
The NT computer that is going to be your SQL server does not have to be a Windows NT Advanced server. In fact in most cases we prefer to use a dedicated NT 4.0 Workstation as the operating system on the SQL server in order to save as much memory for the SQL server process as possible, and to ease the amount of administration on your network.
The more powerful the SQL Server computer is, the faster SuperOffice 4.0 will perform. We recommend a Pentium 166 MHz with 64 MB RAM. The size of the harddisk is not a problem. SuperOffice needs less than 100 Mb.
For a more detailed description on how to install SuperOffice and the Sybase SQL Anywhere server, please refer to the SuperOffice 4.0 User Guide, and the documentation provided by Sybase.
