Swiss Draw

The Swiss draw tournament structure allows players to compete in all rounds of a tournament even if they lose a match. Most large Swiss events cut to the top 8 and finish with a round of single-elimination playoffs. Events with fewer than sixteen players don't usually cut to a top-8 playoff.

For the first round, players are paired randomly. Each following round, players are paired based on their current records and standings. Players with the best records get paired, then the next best records, and so on.

With the Swiss draw structure, the number of players determines the number of rounds before playoffs. This allows any number of players in an event with, at most, one bye per round.
