Check Plugin

Use the Check Plugin action to send visitors to different pages depending on whether they have the specified plugin installed. For example, you might want users to go to one page if they have Shockwave and another page if they do not.

Note: You cannot detect specific plugins on Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) with JavaScript; however, for plugins that also have companion ActiveX controls (such as Shockwave and Flash), checking for a plugin is unnecessary if you have used both the OBJECT and EMBED tags to include your content in the page. In this case, select the Go to First URL if ActiveX is Available option. Deselect the option if you are not using the OBJECT tag or if there is no companion ActiveX control for the plugin.

To use the Check Plugin action:

1 Follow steps 1 through 3 of the procedure in Attaching a behavior.
2 Select Check Plugin from the Actions pop-up menu.
3 Select a plugin from the Plugin pop-up menu, or click Enter and enter the exact name of the plugin in the adjacent field.
You must use the exact name of the plugin as specified in bold on the About Plug-ins page in Netscape Navigator (from Navigator, choose Help > About Plug-ins on Windows or Apple Menu > About Plug-ins on Macintosh).
4 Specify a URL for users that have the plugin in the URL field.
To make users with the plugin stay on the same page, leave the URL field blank.
5 Specify an alternative URL for users that don't have the plugin in the Alt URL field.
To make users without the plugin stay on the same page, leave the Alt URL field blank.
6 Select the Go To First URL if ActiveX is Available option if you are using both OBJECT and EMBED tags.
Because the OBJECT tag downloads the ActiveX control automatically if the user doesn't already have it, this option allows the user to go to the page with the plugin content. ActiveX is currently available only on Microsoft Internet Explorer for Windows95/NT.
7 Click OK.
8 Check that the default event is the one you want.
If it isn't, select another event from the pop-up menu. If the events you want are not listed, change the target browser in the Events For pop-up menu.
