Based on Perl 5.6.1, this is an enhanced distribution, encompassing and taking advantage of the new features in Perl 5.6.1. In addition to the core binary code, this program includes a Perl extension installer and manager. The Windows package also includes Perl for ISAPI and CGI PerlScript. Perl for ISAPI is an IIS plug-in that enhances the speed of standard Perl. CGI PerlScript is an ActiveX scripting engine for Perl.

Norton AntiVirus 2000 detects VBS.NewLove.A in the file ActivePerl-Winfaq12.html (part of ActivePerl documentation). ActivePerl does not have a virus in its documentation, a code sample for Microsoft Outlook triggers the virus alert. Symantec has been notified of this issue.
