PC-cillin 98 (OEM version valued at $89.85) is an anti-virus product designed for web-connected home users. An earlier version (version 3) independently tested by PC User in March rated 4.5 stars out of 5.

The newest version, exclusive to PC User readers this month, supports Windows 95 and Windows 98 and protects computers from virus attacks such as macro viruses and malicious Java applets and ActiveX controls.

It claims a 193% increase in speed compared to PC-cillin 97 (based on in-house benchmark tests) and guards against over 12,000 types of existing viruses. It automatically updates virus pattern files and programs via the Internet.

While no telephone support is available with this fully functioning version, updates via Trend Micro's bulletin board are freely available, and tech support through email via their web site..

These updates can be scheduled daily/weekly/monthly or at a user-specified time after system start-up.

PC-cillan also detects Viruses in attachments and compressed files without opening them. It handles email formats such as Uuencode, MIME and BinHex and Compressed files such as: PKZIP, ARJ, LHA, TAR, GNU-ZIP, UNIX ZIP, UNIX compress, MS-compress, PKLITE, LZEXE, KIET, Cabinet.
