Pocket PC Creations provides a Wireless Activity Monitor window that displays a real-time view and log of the wireless communications server, when it is enabled. The window can be shown or hidden via the Tools menu.
The Activity Monitor window is split into two panes: on the left, a list of the currently connected Pocket PCs is displayed. On the right is a plain text log of server events.
The list of currently connected Pocket PCs is useful for visualising the current state of the network. If the client Pocket PCs are setup to maintain a continuous connection to the server, then this list will provide a real-time view of which clients are online and in range. Small yellow indicator arrows are superimposed onto the Pocket PC icons to indicate receive and transmit status, similar to the indicator lights on a modem.
When one or more client Pocket PCs are selected in the Activity Monitor window, the right-click menu provides a number of options applying to the selected clients. In addition to being able to forcibly disconnect or view the properties of a selected unit, this menu also allows new Pocket PC Creations projects to be dispatched, via the Update Project command. Under Update Project is a list of open projects to choose from. Similarly, there is a Send New Session command which can be used to create and dispatch a new project session to the selected units.
The log of server events is also useful for examining the activity on the network, as it keeps track of all wireless operations, including connections and disconnections, project updates, session dispatches and synchronisations, as well as error messages when any of the above fail. For this reason, the Activity Monitor log is the first place to look if an operation fails unexpectedly. It will often offer a descriptive error message which can be used to diagnose and correct a problem.
