Shortcuts keys
Use these short cut keys to work with field codes:
Shift F9 show/hide field codes
Right click on a field code short cut menu
Control F9 inserts an empty field code
Insert, Field provides a list of field codes
Edit, Select All, and F9 update field codes in the document
Control F9
Field code brackets can only be entered using Control F9 or the
Insert, Field dialogue box. Using the curly brackets on the
keyboard doesn't have the same result.
One liners
When you are typing field codes make sure the text or graphic
information is not split by a line break -- it must appear on one
line. If it does not, you will get an error message.
Framing it
Placing a field code in a frame gives you better control of its
placement on the page and you can line up graphics and text links
neatly. Create your field codes first, switch to viewing the
results of the codes and then select each text link or image, one
at a time, and use Insert, Frame to place the image in a frame.
Remove the border from the frame by selecting it and using
Format, Borders and Shading, None and click OK.
You can now click and drag the images into place. Pressing Shift F9 will show you the frames, possibly layered on top of each other, if you need to edit them.
The graphics in Figure 1a have been placed in frames with their borders removed.
Document location options
You can locate your cursor in specific position in your document
using these shorthand references:
sn section number eg. s4 Section 4
ln line number eg. l10 line 10
fn footnote number eg. f2 footnote 2
an annotation number eg. a3 annotation 3
pn page number eg. p4 page 4
You can also join these shorthand items together to create combinations such as page 1 of section 2 can be represented by: s2p1 etc.
