Q. Audio CDs and CD ROMs will not automatically play on my machine. What could be going wrong?
In order for CDs to automatically play, auto insert notification must be turned on. When this feature is enabled, Windows automatically checks the CD ROM drive to see if any disks have been inserted. When a CD ROM is inserted, Windows determines the type of CD and then either runs the program specified in the autorun.inf file or loads CD Player to play the audio.
When auto insert notification is enabled, Windows automatically runs the program specified in the autorun.inf file
To turn on auto insert notification, right click on My Computer, choose properties and select the Device Manager tab. Scroll down the list of devices until you find the CD ROM. Highlight the CD ROM, then click properties. When the CD ROM properties appear, select the Settings tab and ensure that Auto insert notification is checked.
Enable auto insert notification to have Windows automatically play CDs when they are inserted
Click OK and then reboot your computer.
Your CD ROM drive should now work normally.
