Tip - What is Private Chat

Private Chat is a synchronous system, which means that the two (or more) people taking part have to be connected to FirstClass at the same time.

In the Private Chat area messages you send are displayed immediately on the screen of the person/people within the chat area. These are then read and any replies will immediately be displayed.

People must be invited to/or invite others to participate in Private Chat.

Within the Open University icon (Meeting Place) and also in a few course tutor groups a Private Chat room has been set up - these can be entered by anyone who has access simply by double clicking on the icon. If people are already in these rooms a small speech bubble icon will appear to indicate the room has occupants. You are still permitted to enter even if people are already inside.

Once you enter a Private Chat you will only see messages posted since you entered - you won't see any previous discussion. This means that if you have joined a conversation half-way through it may be confusing at first.

You can only participate in Private Chat with someone who is on the same server as you are connected to.
