LapLink 2000
Moving files between two computers has never been easier. Mark Wilson reveals all

The idea behind LapLink 2000 is very simple. It allows you to connect two PCs together whether they are sitting next to each other or are in different countries, and then access programs, emails and files remotely. The most obvious application for this program is to access your work computer from home - ideal if you ever have the need to work from home, especially if you are prone to forgetting to take the most important files with you. Now, if you arrive back from the office to discover that you do not have everything you needed, you can fire up LapLink 2000, connect to your work computer and transfer the files via the telephone line. When you have finished working, you can then copy the finished documents directly to your office PC's hard drive, ready for a final check in the morning.

Networking

The Voice Chat facility can be useful if you need to show someone how to do something remotely. Not only can you take control of their computer using the software, but you can also issue verbal commands. Laplink 2000 has no special system requirements - all that is needed is a PC running Windows and a modem.

You are not limited to just connecting you your work PC, however. Once that connection has been made, you then have access to the rest of your office network, just as you would when in the office. The program is also very useful for working on the move. Transferring files from your laptop to your desktop computer can be completely automated using an Xchange agent.

Installation

This month's SuperDisc includes the complete version of Laplink 2000. After you have launched the setup routine from the disc interface, you have the option of installing the main program as well as Laplink FTP - a file transfer program. Follow our tutorial opposite for a guide to getting started with the program. You will need to enter the following serial number in order to use this program: LKK PLUS-700003-301
