Linux Software
We're taking a slightly different approach with this month's Linux software, and bringing you a load of software that's still under development. You'll still find our regular features, such as RedHat updates (note: none are available this month for 5.2 or 6.0) and Kernel 2.2.13, but much of the exciting stuff is residing in the linux/developer directory. Please keep in mind that while this software may run fine, it has not reached a final release version, and may behave unpredicatably.
If you're following Chris Jone's tutorial in the magazine, you'll find the classic CD burning command line utilities, mkisofs, cdrecord and cdda2wav here. If you're after a graphical front end, don't miss CDR-Toaster, in the linux/cdrtoaster directory. Visit its homepage at http://www.jump.net/~brooke/cdrtoast/ for more info.
Would it be sacraledge to call ChEOPS the 'Network Neighbourhood' for Linux? See the ChEOPS home page at http://www.marko.net/cheops/ to find out more. You'll find ChEOPS in the linux/developer directory - it's currently at version 0.59.
Many have called the latest release (M12) of the opensource Web browser Mozilla the first public alpha, and indeed it sometimes seems more stable than Netscape! Try it for yourself - source and binaries are in linux/developer. See http://www.mozilla.org to learn how you can contribute to this worthy project.
If you're a fan of KDE, there's a wealth of stuff here for you. Version 1.2 of the backup software, KBackup (http://www.phy.hw.ac.uk/~karsten/KBackup/) is in the linux/kbackup directory. The software installer KInst (http://members.xoom.com/_XOOM/stevedany/steffen/kinst_1_en.htm) is at version 0.1, so it's in the linux/developer directory.
KDE has long been working on its own Office package, KOffice. See the Web page at http://koffice.kde.org for details. Again, it's not at the stable distribution stage, so you'll find it in linux/developer.
Many thanks to Rob Fenwick for helping source some of the software this month. If there's something you'd like to see, feel free to email me!
- Matt Kynaston
Note: PC Plus cannot offer support for the Linux software on this SuperCD. Always refer to the software Web site for the latest information. If you get stuck, we do host a very active Linux forum on our Web site, where questions will be answered by other readers and the PC Plus Linux consultants. Point your newsreader at nntp.futurenet.co.uk.
