Linux Software
Are you a fan of Open Source software? Of course you are! Have you been looking at that copy of O'Reilly's Open Sources: Voices from the Revolution down at your local bookstore and wishing you hadn't blown all your dosh on this copy of PC Plus? Never fear! We've got it here!
In the linux directory on this CD you'll find all the packages you'll need to get your 3D graphics card working. Follow Chris Jones' Advanced Linux Worksop in the magazine. There's more information for most of the programs on the Web.
Packages:
Glide/3DFX - http://linux.3dfx.com/. We've also included the FAQ and Q&A pages to help you get started. You'll find important install info for each of the supported cards in their subdirectories. Please read the install.htm pages appropriate for your card.
Mesa 3D - http://mesa3d.sourceforge.net/. Take a look at the README before using.
Utah-GLX - http://www.utah-glx.sourceforge.net/. Available as source and RPM.
XScreenSaver - http://www.jwz.org/xscreensaver/download.html. C'mon, we know you love it.
Most people will have Perl installed on their system by default. But if you're following the Perl tutorial in the magazine and want to the most recent version, you'll find source and RPMs in the perl folder.
Our regular RedHat updates feature would have graced this CD, except there have been no updates issued since the ones on last month's disk. Don't tell me it's perfect?!
Got a Linux question for the new Q&A section? Send it in! Questions should be specific - 'How do I configure Samba?' takes pages to answer. We're looking at getting a few more to the page than that! Give as much relevant detail as possible - distro, hardware, version of the app that's got you stumped and any logs that'll help our poor Q&A guy get to the bottom of it all. Send your puzzlers to: matt.kynaston@futurenet.co.uk. Suggestions for software to include are always welcome, too. Mail them in!
Note: PC Plus cannot offer support for the Linux software on this SuperCD. Always refer to the software Web site for the latest information. If you get stuck, we do host a very active Linux forum on our Web site, where questions will be answered by other readers and the PC Plus Linux consultants. Point your newsreader at nntp.futurenet.co.uk.
