Dolphin Smalltalk 2.1

Dolphin Smalltalk
This issue marks the first of our Alternative Programming Hands On series, where we not only bring you the skills to learn a new language, but the complete development suites you will need to build with.

Huw Collingbourne kicks it off with the first of a two part series on Smalltalk in this month's magazine. Not only was Smalltalk one of the great innovators of Object Oriented Programming, but it was also one of the first languages to provide a completely integrated development environment.

Languages like C++ and Java have designs that, in the name of efficiency or compatibility, have been compromised from the outset. Smalltalk takes a small number of underlying concepts and applies them consistently throughout. In Smalltalk everything is an object. Because of this consistency, and the small number of grammatical constructs in the language, it's easy to get started. But, although the language itself is "small", the overall system is extremely powerful so using Smalltalk is an empowering experience.

Dolphin Smalltalk has been designed for professionals who want to produce powerful commercial programs quickly and easily; students learning object-oriented programming concepts at school or university; and hobbyists who want to get more out of their PC by building software at home. A help system based on HTML files is included with additional tutorials and documentation. You'll need a web browser to use this application successfully.

Object Arts also sells a number of add-on packages to enhance the basic Dolphin development system. These will be installed in an "Add-On Products" subdirectory beneath the basic installation. You will, however, have to visit the Object Arts website to purchase unlock keys in order to be able to install these extra packages. An upgrade to the latest Dolphin 3.0 release is also available and PC Plus magazine readers may purchase this for a specially reduced price. See the upgrade page in the magazine for full details.

Version 2.1 on this SuperCD is a fully working - the only restriction is that you cannot distribute executables, only the source. If you want to distribute stand-alone applications, take advantage of the upgrade offer on page 53 of the magazine to purchase the latest release.
