OVERVIEW
The IBM Phone for Java 3.1 is the latest Internet phone to incorporate IBM's advanced audio technologies. The software's enhanced audio capabilities give you voice-quality conversations over Intranets, PSTN gateways, the Internet, or your PBX.

The IBM Phone for Java 3.1 support connection to a regular phone device to the standard serial port (using ShelCad Hi-Phone device). This device enables the user to talk in private and in the natural way using a regular phone device. All the regular phone operations dial, hangup ,flash , etc..) can be done from the regular phone device and are reflected in the GUI.

The IBM Phone for Java is a software application that allows you to use your computer to talk to other people, without being limited to sending text, graphics or other files. The software enables you to make calls from your computer (or telephone) to IP addresses, or actual telephones. This is a Java H.323 compliant IP-based phone. It meets industry standards, including RTP streaming, H.323 signaling, G.711, G.723 and GSM codecs, and even interoperates with Microsoft's NetMeeting and H.323 PSTN GateWay.

  1. What is Phone for Java?

    The IBM Phone for Java is a software application that allows you to make calls from your computer or telephone to IP addresses, or actual telephones, without being limited to sending text, graphics or other files.

  2. What platform does the Phone for Java run on?

    Phone for Java requires:

    • 100 MHz Pentium PC (32 MB RAM) running either Windows 95 or Windows NT.

    • A network connection through a token ring card to a LAN or through a modem and SLIP/PPP to an Internet provider.


  3. What other software packages are required?

    A full duplex or half duplex sound card with appropriate drivers installed on your computer, along with a microphone and speaker (or headphones) connected to the sound card or a Shelcad device connected to your telephone. The Shelcad is optional for enhanced use of your Phone for Java and may be installed on its own or together with a sound card. (The Shelcad adapter lets you use your regular phone to dial or talk when using the Phone for Java.

    Computer Windows 95 or Windows NT
    Java Tool JDK 1.1.6+, 1.2 or IDE environment which supports these levels of Java
    Disk Space 32 MB RAM and 100 MHz Pentium PC
    Network Connections Network connection through a token ring card to a LAN or through a modem and SLIP/PPP to an Internet provider
    Sound Card A full duplex or half duplex sound card with appropriate drivers installed on your computer, along with a microphone and speaker (or headphones) connected to the sound card.

Speech for Java Installation Procedures:

  1. Uninstall the previous version of Phone for Java using the Uninstall program. Make sure that all the files are deleted from the Phone for Java directory.

  2. Unzip the Jphone3x.zip file.

  3. Install the Phone for Java by double clicking the setup.exe file. The default location is c:\program files\ibm\javaphone.

  4. Double click the Phone for Java icon .
