Linux Software

Tux!

PC Plus cannot offer support for the Linux software on this SuperCD. Always refer to the software Web site for the latest information. If you get stuck, we do host a very active Linux forum on our Web site, where questions will be answered by other readers and the PC Plus Linux consultants. Point your newsreader at nntp.futurenet.co.uk.

This month we're pleased to bring you the Linux Documenation Project. You'll need to get your hands on a JavaScript- and Java-enabled browser to view it as we intended, but if that's not possible, take a peek in the linux/ldp folder on this CD. There's a lot of stuff

Here's where you'll find the freshest meat we've found over the last month, along with useful (sometimes crucial!) updates to your system. Last month we ran updates to Red Hat 6, not 5.2. Some readers pointed out on our newsgroup that this wasn't exactly fair, since the last full distribution we ran was 5.2. We're correcting the problem this month, featuring not only all of the 5.2 updates but also the version 6 updates that have appeared in the last month. You'll also the find Gnome 1.0.7 rpms - although the source came out well before we went to press last month, the rpms only appeared the day after we'd gone to dupe.

Other sofware includes Grip, the mp3 CD ripping software, Snort for sniffing your networks, Vim, mentioned in the Linux Workshop, the latest from Enlightenment and the latest from XFree86. It's all in the linux folder on this CD. And that's all we had space for this month!

As well as the software you'll find in the linux/ folder on this CD, you should also mosey on over to SuperCD-B, where you'll find IBM's alphaWorks. There you'll find some Linux-specific software, such as the Linux Java Virtual Machine, and Jikes, the Java compiler, as well as a lot of Java XML tools, which will work on Linux. alphaWorks is developing some exciting software, and seems to be pro-Linux - they're site is well worth a visit.

And before you dive in, remember: we're always open to suggestions for software to include in the Linux section. Post them to the pcplus.linux newsgroup or send them direct to the New Media Editors.
