TeeChart Pro ActiveX 3

Packed with many exciting features, TeeChart Pro will help you deliver your charting application quickly and effectively, as both an easy-to-use tool to the novice and a flexible friend to the experienced developer.

ODBC v.3 compliance enables you to connect to chart live data, and the authenticoded CAB, teechart.cab, eases the deployment of Web or Intranet based applications.

Included with the installation is a host of HTML-based tutorials (which require a frames-enabled browser) and sample code, as well as the on-line help.

To help you chart your first project, Dermot Hogan continues his tutorial from the CD Pages in the magazine below.

Getting started with TeeChart Pro

All the Visual Basic 6 project files to accompany this tutorial are located in the full\teechart\tutorial folder on this SuperCD. To copy them to your hard drive, click the button below.

A picture speaks a thousand words: with the TeeChart graph and chart tool you can add visual zap to your data. The problem is what type of display to use - pie chart, line or scatter graphs? There are hundreds of methods and options to choose from in TeeChart and working out which ones to use can sometimes be a little confusing. But there's an easy way to see what you can do. TeeChart contains a run time graphing editor that you can use to set the properties of your graph and immediately see the results.

To use the TeeChart Editor, install the TeeChart control and run the program, GRAPH.EXE, either by copying the project files to your hard drive or clicking the link to the left. This is a compiled version of the program covered in the TeeChart tutorial in the magazine (and so you'll need to have Visual Basic 6 installed).

Click to enlarge When you run the program, you should see a screen like the one on the left. Click to image to view full size. First click on the Make Graph button. You'll see the graph described in the tutorial in the magazine displayed. Now click Editor and you'll see the TeeChart run time editor appear.

When you clicked 'Make Graph' a new graph will have been made. This is stored internally in the TeeChart control as a 'series' - here it's called 'Series0'. In the tutorial, the graph was set as a two dimensional chart. But if you want to see how it looks as a three dimensional chart, just click the 'General' tab and check the '3 Dimensions' check box. You'll see immediately that the graph becomes a three dimensional version of the existing graph. Now you can enhance the 3D effect by altering the 3D per cent value from its default value of 15 to, say, 60. Again you'll see the effect immediately. Click to enlarge

You can also display multiple graphs on the same chart. First reset the graph by exiting the graph editor and clicking on Make Graph again. Next, open the editor again and create a new graph by clicking Add. In the Gallery window, choose the style of chart that you want - say Pie and click OK.

Click to enlarge Now in the Editing window, select the Series tab (the top one - there are two of them), then in the Series dialog box select Data Source, then Function from the drop-down list box. Then from the Function drop-down list box select Copy and from the Available list box, select Series0 and move it across into the Selected list box with the '>' button. This will make the data that's been set for Series0 in the program available for the new Pie series, Series 1. Click the Close button and you'll see a Pie chart of the mathematical function superimposed on the original flat, 2D graph.

Finally, you might really want just the Pie chart and not see the original graph. Click the Editor button again and uncheck the Series0 check box. This will immediately cause the original graph to be hidden. But you'll still see a set of captions in blue at the top of the graph. To get rid of these, click on the Titles tab and you'll see an edit box with the text in. You can then edit this is any way you like using the Font , Border and Pattern boxes.

These are just some of the things you can do with the TeeChart interactive editor - enjoy!
