How to Use These Sites

Copying your Site up to the Web.

Before you can copy your Web Site up to the web, you'll need some web space! If you don't already have web space XOOM is a great place to get several megs of web space for free! Join XOOM now! It only takes a few minutes and you'll have your web space!

Copying your site up to the Web is called uploading. There are generally two ways to upload your web site:

"Automatic Uploading" (also known as Publishing) is a feature of some HTML Editors. In order to use this feature it must be set up correctly to work with your Web Site Host. If you are a XOOM Member then you can simply follow our easy tutorials located in our Help Center.

If you chose those not to use an HTML Editor, or your HTML Editor does not support the publishing feature, then you'll need to use an FTP Program to manually get your Web Site up to your web space.

You'll need to locate an FTP Program. FTP stand for File Transfer Protocol. Netscape Navigator & Internet Explorer are not FTP Programs!. While both programs do have some FTP capabilities, they can fall short when it comes to uploading file to a server. Our Help Center at XOOM lists several programs that you can use for FTP and has tutorials on how to use them to upload files to XOOM. If you're pages will not be hosted on XOOM, then you will need to find out from your web space provider how to upload files to their web servers.

If you're already familiar an FTP program, then here's the "short version" for uploading your Web Site to XOOM...

  1. FTP to server called: ftp.xoom.com using your Member Name and Password for access.
  2. This will put you on the top level of your web space directory. (i.e. http://members.xoom.com/MemberName/)
  3. Now just copy everything you'll need into this directory. Feel free to make new directories if you want. XOOM has no limitations on the directory structure of your web space!
  4. You're done!
For the "long version" you'll need to go to XOOM's Help Center.
