Today's Army

The Army exists to defend Canada and protect vital national interests. It does this by maintaining and contributing a sustainable, capable and united armed force. It further contributes to international peace and security by providing forces to multinational operations.

The Army is first and foremost PEOPLE — groupings of soldiers (units) who are organized to fight on the ground. Units are functionally equipped and trained to defeat the enemy with indirect fire (Artillery) and with heavy direct fire (Armour), while exploiting terrain features to ease or restrict movement (Engineers) and, if necessary, to fight in direct contact (Infantry). Within any units, the officers lead the soldiers, also called Non-Commissioned Members.

Our Objectives

The army is responsible for:

Defending Canadian territory and helping to maintain Canada's sovereignty by providing land surveillance and combat-ready forces;

Contributing to the collective defence of North America;

Providing armed and unarmed assistance to civil authorities when needed to maintain public order and security or to assist in emergency relief; and

Supporting Canadian interests abroad, including forces for UN, NATO, and other multilateral operations, peacekeeping, and humanitarian assistance.
