Franklin
The Marilyn Monroe Story by Joe Franklin and Laurie Palmer
Publication: Rudolph Field Company / Greenburg. 1953. USA.

ISBN: --
Details: Hardback. 80 pages.
Contains: 39 photos (b&w). Filmography.

This slim volume is credited as being the first Marilyn Monroe biography. Though touted as "The INTIMATE Inside Story of Hollywood's Hottest Glamour Girl" it is actually quite soft on hard facts. To the authors' credit, however, they showed remarkable prescience in predicting the conflicts that Marilyn and Joe DiMaggio would face if they married (the book was written during their courtship). The photos are mostly standard 20th Century-Fox publicity shots, but a few gems are contained within. It is interesting to note that the filmography at the end does not mention Dangerous Years, Hometown Story, or The Fireball, but it does list Pink Tights as one of Marilyn's upcoming films. I have read in Joe Franklin's memoirs that this book is frustratingly scarce because the publisher died right as the book was going to press, and the full printing was never completed.

Further Reading

Other books that, though listed under different categories (or not available to me at this time), contain a considerable amount of biographical information:

My Sister Marilyn
by Berniece Baker Miracle
This book by Marilyn's half-sister contains a wealth of biographical information about Marilyn's childhood.

The Life and Curious Death of Marilyn Monroe
by Robert Slatzer
As the title suggests, Slatzer's well-known book offers a good deal of information on Marilyn's life in addition to the investigation into her death.

All of the books in the Equal Mix section of this web site contain a fair amount of biographical information.
