Jock Carroll himself admitted that the character of Gloria Heaven in his book The Shy Photographer was inspired by and mostly based-on Marilyn Monroe. Carroll met Marilyn while he was on assignment for Weekend magazine to take some pictures of MM while she was filming Niagara, and most of what transpires between the protagonist of this book and the character of Gloria Heaven closely mirrors Carroll's own description of his encounters with MM during his time in Niagara Falls.
