John Casablancas on the Runway After the preliminaries, Elite's chairman, John Casablancas (pictured), was introduced. He strode onto the catwalk and spelled out the event's purpose. Elite, he explained in an unmistakable French accent, is looking for the next group of supermodels and expects to see some 30,000 to 40,000 prospective models during this search.

He clearly knows what to look for. Elite Models, founded by him in 1983, has become a modeling monolith with annual billings in excess of $100 million. It has grown to 24 agencies worldwide and represents many of the world's top models, including Claudia Schiffer and Frederique van der Wal, among many others.

Casablancas offered some encouraging words to the candidates standing anxiously in the wings before he stepped off the catwalk and took his seat at the judge's table.
