Special Report: Fashion Week New York, the Spring 1997 Collections

Some funk, alot of class, sheerness, layers, length and slanting stripes are making Fashion Week New York the bi-annual event everyone expected it to be. What's new? For starters, there are a record number of shows -- 54 to be exact. Second, there are lots of trends. Cleavage is out and fishtail hemlines, gold chain mail, and bare shoulders and backs are in. And, unlike years past, not as prevalent is the truly outrageous. That may be due in large part to the excellence of the week's designs. They're good enough, in fact, that dressing models in tin foil and cardboard with hairdos like that of the creature in the movie "Predator" aren't needed to get attention. That's not to say there aren't some vintage outrages cropping up here and there. Some of the press found Versace's Versus black satin pants raunchy. Others thought Betsey Johnson was too "earthy" with her bold, new collection. But there's plenty of conservatism as well. In fact, the majority of the 5,000 outfits shown, and to be shown, seem a bit more grounded, according to SUPERMODEL.COM's correspondents. There are lots of colors and multiple shapes, such as those seen on Linda Evangelista (pictured).
