![]() Bijou Has a Good Excuse this TimeNew York's favorite naughty girl, Bijou Phillips (pictured), was a no show at the recent "Dogs Walk the Catwalk" fashion show at the Fashion Cafe. She was supposed to strut the runway with her pooch Flea to benefit the American Cancer Society. Despite repeated attempts to find her, the driver sent to pick her up finally gave up. When it was learned that Bijou had been partying heartily the night before, everybody figured she'd overslept. When she finally did check in, she explained that her absence wasn't due to any of the above, but rather because she was at her mom's bedside in the hospital. Her mother had been "beaten up." There was no further information about who beat her up or what her condition was. This time Bijou really did have a good excuse for not showing up.
New Designer is Hitting the StreetsBefore Veronica Bond came to the U.S. in 1995, she was a design assistant for Karl Lagerfield in Paris. Before that had been a model in Germany, her native land. Now she's in New York and rising fast. In fact, once fearing that if she didn't make it here, she'd have to become a flight assistant, she's now completely stressed out from all the work she's getting. With little money, she arrived in New York and bartered her way into a shop on Sullivan Street which needed various renovations. Instead of paying for them, she made a dress for the wife of the electrician who did the electrical work for her. But she's been resourceful in other ways, as well. She hired a handful of models to don her designs and then frequent the haunts of New York's well heeled. The strategy worked and she's developed an increasingly loyal clientele. She has so much business now she is not sure when she'll be able to take a break. She credits location with her success. "New York is what made this happen," she tells the "New York Post." "Germans all wear the same thing, but New Yorkers have a very individualistic style. I can make a piece here and know that there's a New Yorker out there who wants something special and unique and different." Her dresses range anywhere from $600 to $1,800 in price. |
