Dispatching Crippled Game Birds
Rather than wring the necks of crippled game birds I prefer to use a technique I've heard called the "Taxidermist's Squeeze." Hold the bird by the back just behind the wings. With your thumb on one side and first two fingers on the other, feel for the heart and squeeze tightly. The pressure will kill the bird in a short time without mussing feathers or breaking bones. Even if you don't plan to have the bird mounted, this method, I think, shows more respect for your quarry than does holding it by the head and whirling it around and around.
