Turkey Hunting Tips

Keeping Boxcalls Quiet

Many hunters shy away from box calls because they will often squeak and yelp all by themselves as the lid and lips rub together while you carry them through the woods. An easy way to keep a box call quiet is to cut a strip of drab cloth (I used an old brown sock) about five inches by two and place it over the lips of the call, with the long ends hanging over each side. Then use rubber bands to hold the lid in place. The cloth will effectively muffle the box, yet it can be removed instantly when you set up to call. (Copyright ⌐ 1995 Philip Bourjaily. Using a Push-button Turkey Call

Friction-type turkey calls are extremely effective until they get wet. Then they are next to useless. For hunting in wet weather, try sealing a push-button box call inside a plastic bag (Ziploc bags are perfect for this). With just a couple of minutes practice you'll find you can still use the call easily, even though it's completely enclosed in plastic and thoroughly waterproof. (Copyright ⌐ 1995 Philip Bourjaily.
