Sportsman are where you find them

I will give you a little background on myself to explain where I am coming from. I have been a Fish and Wildlife officer for over twenty-five years. I have seen all kinds. I have seen some of the worst game hogs you can imagine. I have arrested subjects that have taken doves in the hundreds.
These individuals were not poor or hungry. The were from the professional field, doctors, lawyers, judges. police officers etc. Do, I consider them sportsman, I do not. At the same time, I have met individuals from these same professions really do not care if they kill anything but just enjoying being out there. The point is un-sportsman like conduct comes from all walks of life, the rich and poor alike.

We sportsman are own enemies. If we see somebody trespassing, killing wrong the species of wildlife, killing too many animals or catching too many fish, we do nothing, we don't want to get involved. Than we get upset if our hunting or fishing seasons get curtailed or cannot hunt on that special piece of property we have been hunting the last 10 or 20 years.

There has been times, I have while out hunting, I stop in a local resturant to eat and overhear conversation how these so called sportsman killed more or caught more than their limit. If, I can hear so can others.

Why do you think land owners and non-hunters look at us the way they do. When, I first came to work, it seemed like only five percent of the hunters and fisherman create problems for the rest of us. I have found in the last few years, problems are closer 25 percent violate the rules of hunting and fishing and common courtesy.

We, as hunters and fisherman need to change our ways.

There is no greater joy to me when I see or meet a person who is out enjoying the hunt or fishing trip just for the joy of it. In my forty years of hunting and fishing, I have seen it all. There are a lot of good hunters and fisherman out there. We need to speak up. Some of the organizations I see today are to doing that. Elk Foundation, Mule deer foundation, Sheep Foundation, Turkey Foundation, Pheasants forever, and Quail unlimited to just to name a few. Well I have said enough, it is time for you true sportsman to speak up out there
