Hunters who put a premium on their time afield, owe it to themselves to look closely at the many forms of premium hunting and target ammunition available.
When it comes to ammunition, premium has several meanings. Premium often means high octane, but it can also mean better accuracy, improved projectile performance, reduced recoil, and better reliability. Collectively this factory-produced fodder is the equal of ammunition painstakingly hand loaded to perfection. A little more per box, the increased cost of premium ammunition pays for itself with improved results in the field.
This year fans of Big Green have a chance to enjoy Remington's new Premier STS Target Loads. According to Remington these shotgun shells are the best commercially available in the world. Designed with the reloader in mind, specific advantages include smoother wad insertion, more responsive crimping, and higher crimp memory. In use the crimp offers significantly less opening resistance, improving pattern distribution and density, plus reducing felt recoil.
Several performance levels will be produced with the shot velocity printed on each box to help target shooters select the perfect load for trap, skeet, and sporting clays. This excellent target ammunition is available only in 12-gauge.
Remington also added a 12-gauge, 3-1/2 inch 00 buckshot load for deer hunters. The heaviest 12-gauge payload available, this new load features 2.2 ounces or 18 pellets of 00 buckshot. Granulated polyethylene buffering is used to provide tight and consistent patterning.
The popular Safari Grade Ammunition line has two additions including the .300 Wby. Mag., and the .458 Win. Mag. Both calibers feature the Swift A-Frame dual-core bullets. The .300 Wby. Mag. comes with a 200-grain bullet and muzzle velocity of 2,925 feet/second.
The .458 Win. Mag. is matched up with a 450-grain bullet sparking a muzzle velocity of 2,150 feet/second and a whopping 3,609 foot-pounds of energy at 100 yards.
Winchester has followed suit with an impressive live of new ammunition for 1996. The popular Fail Safe rifle ammunition line has been expanded to include three new loadings. Leading the way, a 270-grain bullet will be offered in the .375 H&H Mag. A 180-grain bullet for the .300 H&H Magnum is also available, offering hunters a muzzle velocity of 2,880 feet/second and 3,316 foot-pounds of energy. Also a 165-grain bullet has been added to the .300 Win. Mag. for hunters looking towards a flat-shooting and hard-hitting round. The new 165-grain offering features a 3,120 feet/second muzzle velocity and 3,567 foot-pounds of energy.
Turkey hunters will want to check out Winchester's expanded Double X Magnum Turkey Load. New this year a 10-gauge 3-1/2 inch and 12-gauge 3-1/2 inch magnum load are offered. Both loads feature buffered copper-plated shot.
The 10-gauge loading features 2-1/4 ounces of #4, #5, or #6 shot. Fans of the 12-gauge 3-1/2 inch load will enjoy an identical payload of #4, #5, or #6 shot.
Also new, Winchester has developed a Double X buffered load for 20-gauge fans. This 20-gauge 3-inch load features 1-1/4 ounces of #5 or #6 shot, that's ideal for young hunters or for women who are recoil sensitive.
Not to be outdone, Federal has expanded their ammunition line considerably. Federal says the new Premium High Energy Rifle ammunition is like getting a free caliber upgrade. With a velocity boost of up to 200 feet/second, hunters can also look forward to flatter trajectory, higher energy levels, and less wind drift. Available in .308, .30-06, .300 Win. Mag., and .338 Win. Mag., these calibers are offered with chambering for the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw and Nosler Partition bullets.
Fans of Federal's Premium Rifle Cartridges will be happy to know several new calibers have joined the lineup including the .220 Swift, .257 Wby. Mag., .35 Whelen .416 Rem. Mag., and .22 Win. Mag. In addition, several new loadings have been offered for the existing calibers including a 115-grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claw for the .25-06, a 130-grain Bear Claw for the .270, a 140-grain Nosler Ballistic Tip for the 7mm-08, a 150-grain Ballistic Tip for the 7mm Rem. Mag., and a 150-grain Bear Claw for the .300 Win. Mag.
Federal offers the fastest steel shot in a duck blind with their Premium High Velocity Steel shot shells. Hard-hitting steel with a velocity of up to 1,450 feet/second, Federal's new waterfowling loads reach the target quicker offering less lead and more downrange energy. A patented new wad creates dense shot patterns up to 90 percent at 40 yards. This premium steel shot is available in 10- or 12-gauge and in a variety of shot sizes.
Hard-to-hit or hard-to-stop game animals are the perfect place to test out the new and existing lines of premium ammunition. From woodcock to Canada geese, woodchucks to whitetails, premium rifle and shotgun ammunition can add more excitement and pleasure to your next hunting adventure.
