Preventing Misfires in Percussion Cap Rifles

I used to be plagued by misfires with percussion cap rifles in the field until an experienced shooter gave me the following advice: when cleaning the rifle, remove the nipple and clean and dry it carefully. Do not put it back on the rifle, but store it separately. Before loading your gun, replace the nipple then snap four or five caps to make sure it's thoroughly dry. Since I've taken those simple precautions I haven't suffered a single misfire. (Copyright ⌐ 1995 Philip Bourjaily. All Rights Reserved.)
