Reading Deerhair Signs

Some mortally hit deer run away without spilling even the tiniest drop of blood. It's virtually impossible, however, for a bullet to strike an animal without cutting off some hair. The length and color of the hair you find can help you determine where the deer was hit. Long, dark hair indicates a good hit to the body, while white hairs come from low hits, and very short hairs mean the bullet nicked a leg. (Copyright ⌐ 1995 Philip Bourjaily. All Rights Reserved)
