The Ages of Man

Contrapunto. Catedral Vieja de Salamanca, 1993 (fedh)

The cultural project entitled The Ages of Man (Las Edades del Hombre) came about as a result of the desire of the eleven dioceses of Castilla Le≤n being as they are the heirs to an immense artistical and historical heritage to portray by means of those flashes of true beauty that we call works of art the evolution of man his life, his hopes, his suffering and his death in our land. Man, who in the form of wooden panels, tapestries, books and music, has left a reminder of the Great Questions that have been at the heart of all cultural expression since time immemorial.

Up to the present point in time there have been five stages to the project, its exhibitions having been held at the cathedrals of Valladolid (October, 1988); Burgos (May,1990); Le≤n (October, 1991); Salamanca (December, 1993); and Antwerp (September, 1995). All in all, The Ages of Man has been visited by over four million people and has received several awards, among which we should highlight :

Episcopal ConferenceÆs Premio Bravo.
Castilla Le≤n Arts Prize.
Spanish National RadioÆs Ojo Crφtico del Milenio
Castilla Le≤n Tourism Prize, Blas≤n de Oro.
recognition by UNESCO as being a Cultural Decade Activity
Salamanca Medal of Honour.
the Golden Medal of the Spanish Fine Arts Institute.
Exposición iconográfica de Valladolid, marzo de 1989 (fedh)

Thus we have been afforded the opportunity, by means of five different exhibitions, of delving into the depths of man of all mankind and of coming face to face with him by means of the most exquisite fruit ever borne of human intelligence: Art. The aim of these exhibitions has also been to remind us that there are signs to be seen everywhere telling us of the possibility of a novum, that is, a reconciliation of men and peoples with the very best of their natures and of their history.
