At the light of two severe flooding events which occurred on the 28th of January 1996 in the South of France (Department de l'Herault) and on the 19th of June 1996 in Italy in the Versilia Region we shall try to assess the feasibility of todays's meso-scale NWP models to forecast such events in the daily operational routine.
This assessment will relay on the operational forecasts produced by the meso-scale model in operation at the Swiss Meteorological Institute.
We shall also look for both events at the meteorological context, specially at the role played -if any- by the potential vorticity.
