Mesoscale Convective Systems are responsible for many heavy rain events in the fall-season over the Western Mediterranean area, as well as damaging winds and tornadoes. Due to different factors contributing to the movement (synoptic and mesoscale), these convective systems are not forecast very well by operational numerical weather prediction models. In this study different approaches are applied to investigate the movements of 67 mesoscale convective systems in order to develop a future operational procedure into McIDAS system.
Data are based on the IR satellite climatology (objective parameters), sounding data and numerical weather prediction outputs.
