DUST STORMS OVER MEDITERRANEAN

Hassan, Ahmed Adel (Egyptian Meteorological Authority, Cairo, Egypt)

The aim of this paper is to investigate the phenomenon of dust storms over the Mediterranean coastal area of Africa. Therefore the study discussed their definitions, types, general characteristics and their relation to weather elements. A comparative study between the Mediterranean dust storms and the storms in other parts of the world had been carried out, in addition to numerical simulations of some dust storm cases.

The results showed the importance of descending motion for true dust storms and suggested a mechanism for them where the jet stream and transverse indirect circulation may play an important role in storms of desert type.
