High resolution numerical simulations of one or more case studies of interest of Mesoscale Alpine Program (MAP) is under development. An intecomparison of the hydrostatic LAMBO model and the non-hydrostatic MM5 model will be carried on. LAMBO is the Limited area model running operationally at the regional Meteorological Service of Emilia- Romagna region, Northern Italy, and is based on a version of the NMC ETA model. MM5 is the last version of the NCAR/PSU mesoscale model based on Anthes and Warner (1978), used for research purpose at the University of l'Aquila. This intercomparison will be mainly addressed to investigate the role played by horizontal and vertical resolution and by the hydrostatic approximation in such cases of heavy precipitation in the Alpine region. The two way nesting and an explicit computation of cloud water and rain will be used to run the MM5. Different cumulus convection parametrizations will be compared and the sensitivity of the MM5 model to different initial and boundary conditions will be discussed.
