The users demands, as well as the scientific interest, have led in the field of statistical and synoptic climatology to the investigation of the magnitude and causes of precipitation extremes. Therefore, extreme value distribution has been applied for the assessment of maximum daily precipitation amounts, that could be expected for different return-periods along the eastern Adriatic coast. Analysis of synoptic situations causing precipitation extremes higher than the estimated maxima for 20-year return-period, has resulted in the classification of precipitation weather types and the corresponding frequency distribution of precipitation maxima for each location over the studied period 1951-1995. These results are applicable in the assessment of the risk of dangerous precipitation events, which may harm men or constructions. Therefore they are of great significance for forecasting as well as for regional land-use planning.
