In autumn, the occidental mediterranean ocean is a source of latent and sensible heat. This causes the development of cyclones that sometimes deepen rapidly; in some cases, they give rise to structures similar to tropical cyclones.

It is important that this kind of structures be simulated by numerical weather prediction models correctly.

The aim of this paper is to study the behaviour of the HIRLAM model on the synoptic-scale development on the cyclone and the mesoscale structure in its period of rapid deepening. Within this context, we will design experiments to test the sensitivity of the development to some parameters of the model.

The case of study chosen is the ERICA IOP 5 storm that has similar characteristics to the mediterranean one and a wide observational data base, what allows a better evaluation of the model results.
