CIRCULATION INDICES RELATED TO EXTREME TEMPERATURE AND RAINFALL CONDITIONS IN THE MEDITERRANEAN

Kutiel, Haim (University of Haifa, Israel)

Maheras, Panagiotis (University of Thessaloniki, Greece)

Circulation types were identified by means of zonal and meridional indices calculated separately in ten different regions of 20░x20░ over the Mediterranean and Europe. Seasonal mean daily temperatures and rainfall totals in four stations; Lisbon, Luqa (Malta), Athens and Jerusalem, were compared with circulation types for a period of over 100 years. Correlation coefficients of circulation indices with temperatures and precipitation, for each station in each season were calculated and mapped. Circulation types associated with cold or hot and dry or wet seasons in each station were defined and mapped. Different circulation types were identified for each season and location and will be discussed in the conference.
