SOME CLIMATOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF HEAVY RAINFALLS IN MEDITERRANEAN SPAIN

Guijarro, Jose A. (Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia, Palma de Mallorca, Spain)

Daily precipitation data from more than 3000 raingauge Spanish Mediterranean stations, for the 1951-95 period, were extracted from the INM climatological data base. After selection of the stations with a more complete and consistent records, different statistical methods have been applied to study the spatial and temporal climatological aspects of the 24 hour precipitations exceeding certain thresholds.

Following the discussion of the previous results, connections with shorter precipitation records are derived, focusing on recent pluviographic information from the Balearic Islands.
