SGS-THOMSON develops dedicated 486 microprocessor for low-cost PC entertainment system with a major Chinese partner

Beijing China May 29th 1996 - SGS-THOMSON Microelectronics has developed a semicustom 486 microprocessor with Sichuan Ding Tian Microelectronics Co., Ltd to build low-cost, PC-based entertainment systems.

The fully static ST486DX ASIC core is being used in conjunction with a high performance semi-custom standard cell technology and a comprehensive library of functions to build a powerful yet cost-effective PC entertainment system.

The 2 chips PC solution that can be later integrated into a single chip 486 PC, includes the 486DX2/4 core, a UMA chip set, SVGA graphic engine, DRAM controller, PAL/NTSC encoder and MPEG-2 decoder. This will be used as the basis of a home P.C. based entertainment or Multimedia Home System (MHS) being designed and manufactured by Ding Tian.

Commenting on the development Mr Chen Ya Ping general manager of Ding Tian said "MHS project, was identified as one of the key 52 heavyweight technological programs of 1996 by the Chinese authority, and is the only selection in the multimedia PC arena. This project generates a lot of interests in both domestic market and export market."

Ding Tian is a high technology enterprise specializing in developing and manufacturing multimedia products. The company is jointly owned by Sichuan Provincial Education Commission, China Engineering Physics Institute (Yijing Co), Brilliant Development Corporation (Group) Chengdu, etc. The headquarters of the company is located in the Chengdu high technology development center in Sichuan province. The production site is at the Jiang You development zone of Sichuan province.
