Allowances reduce the amount of income on which you have to pay tax. TaxCalc automatically gives all users the basic personal allowance plus any extra you are entitled to because you are aged 65 or over, and, if relevant, the widow's bereavement allowance. But you should complete this section if you want to claim any of the following:

  • married couple's allowance
  • transitional allowance if you are a married woman who got married to your present husband before 6 April 1990, and received transitional allowance in the last tax year (1998-99)
  • blind person's allowance (either on your own behalf or if your husband or wife is entitled to the allowance but cannot make full use of it)
  • additional personal allowance if you were a single parent at some point during 1999-2000. You can also claim if you were married but your husband or wife was incapacitated throughout the tax year.

TaxCalc will complete the appropriate page of the tax return. To view this, go to Tax Return in the Inland Revenue Forms section of the Navigator.

If none of the above apply to you, click here to continue to the Capital Gains section.
